The effect of flipchart board media on ninth-grade students’ ability to analyze the structure and language features of short stories

Abstract

This study aimed to examine students’ ability to analyze the structure and language features of short stories through the use of flipchart board media among ninth-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Kutacane in the 2024/2025 academic year. The population of this study consisted of all ninth-grade students totaling 68 students, while the sample comprised 19 students selected through purposive sampling. The research employed an experimental method using a one-group pretest–posttest design. Data were collected through tests assessing students’ ability to analyze short story structures and language features before and after the implementation of flipchart board media. The results of data analysis indicated that the mean score of students’ posttest achievement was 81.05, which falls into the “good” category, with a standard deviation of 5.52. When compared to the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) for Indonesian language subjects at the junior high school level, which is set at 70, the students’ achievement exceeded the required standard. These findings demonstrate that the use of flipchart board media effectively supports students in analyzing both the structural elements and linguistic characteristics of short stories. Therefore, it can be concluded that flipchart board media contributes positively to improving ninth-grade students’ ability to analyze the structure and language features of short stories at SMP Negeri 2 Kutacane during the 2024/2025 academic year.
